Sound to Symbol
Sound symbols play an important role in language learning and communication. Based on Preverbal Elemental Music, series of apps are designed to support complex sound pattern perception in relation to basic visual experiences. Musical sound sequences have been specially composed and configured, and include syllabic rhythm of corresponding visual images. No language skills necessary. Ages 2 to 99
Category: Fruits/Vegetables
Level 2: Rearranged visual images and their shapes, rearranged auditory sequences. Medium differentiation level for guided discovery: musical sound patterns become sound symbols to represent the meaning
•Musical sound pattern + Visual Image + Shape of the image + Motor action
Discover: touch images of different fruits/vegetables or their shapes on the screen and listen to different musical sound sequences
•specially composed and matched with each visual object
•3 second duration
•syllabic rhythm presented 3 times in different pitch ranges
•prerecorded
•acoustic violin, percussion instruments and keyboard
Compare: elements of less different musical sound sequences
•timbre
•rhythmic contour and accents
•melodic contour
•tempo
Connect the sound symbol to the meaning: recognize that the same musical sound sequence represents both the image and its shape
Matching:
•Listen to a musical sound sequence
•Compare to experiences from previous screens
•Use visual cues if available
•Drag the matching fruit/vegetable visual image or its shape to the •question box
•Keep track of your actions in the end of the app: number of answers correct
